Synopsis[]

In a climactic battle, the Unit and its allies team up to fight the Camarilla. Alder races across the world to find the final piece of the First Song.

Plot[]

In the aftermath of the fall of Fort Salem, President Kelly Wade heads back to the Chippewa Cession, as Washington D.C. is crawling with Camarilla. Intelligence indicates that the Camarilla attack is focused on the Mycelial chamber and the Necro facility. The Unit decides to head in, giving it one last go, "for goddess and country." Alban Hearst penetrates the Necro facility, determined to capture Penelope Silver. He encounters and captures Izadora, asking her she thinks the Mother will pop or shrivel when it's all over. Izadora tells him there's only one thing he needs to know: that she's going to kill them all. Hearst orders her pumped with drugs, saying that it's going to be a wild night, as Izadora cackles madly.

Sarah Alder arrives in the Republic of Ghana. They tell her that they knew of her being back from the dead and ask of her purpose there. She tells them that her business is nobody's other than her own. She then seemingly vanishes, leaving them confused and upset. Back at Fort Salem, Petra orders the Unit to the Necro facility. Anacostia, however, stops them briefly, telling them that she wants to say just how proud of them she is.

As the Unit prepares to head into battle, they discuss Tally Craven and the budding romance between her and Gregorio Shellbark. As Abigail and Adil charge in, striking down enemy forces, they discuss plans for their honeymoon. Elsewhere, Petra, Anacostia, Sterling and M summon a powerful storm Work to take down a large group of enemies. In the process, however, a vehicle is sent hurtling toward them, very nearly killing them all. Anacostia detects the danger and uses a Work to push the others aside, but is hit by the vehicle and killed. Sterling mourns over her dead body, but Petra tells him that there will be time to grieve later, that they must keep moving and there's nothing more they can do. As he stays put, she pleads with him that they have a war to him, even as he keeps telling Anacostia to wake up.

The Unit and accompanying forces continue to battle their way through, but find themselves stymied by new troops with armor that have the power to block all sound. Back in Ghana, Alder searches through old records, discovering a record of a powerful witch that was sold into slavery. Petra again tries to rouse Sterling, telling him that they all loved Anacostia. The Unit comes face-to-face with Alban Hearst, who tells them that they've found their voices too and they have to listen to him. He tells Raelle that he doesn't look too good, asking if it's a fungal infection. He pushes a button, causing Raelle to fall to the ground and sending Alder reeling. Raelle sends out a sort of purple smoke, consuming Adil and sending them to the floor as well. Alban quips that he didn't see that coming, calling it a happy accident. Tally and Abigail lash out, taking down the soldiers, while Hearst flees.

In the aftermath, they wonder where Alder is and what will happen if she can't find the last steward. Abigail says that everyone is going to die and nothing makes any sense. Tally, however, tells her that maybe it does and they just can't see it from there, that it's simply bigger than all of them. In Ghana, Alder gets back up, okay. Nicte Batan arrives, summoning a swarm of bats and taking out a number of enemy forces. She tells the Unit that Wade sent her. As the Unit continues to fight, Raelle opens the door to the Mycelium. The Unit, along with Adil and Scylla, goes through while Nicte and Gregorio remain behind to fend off the enemy forces.

They find themselves in a bleak landscape that matches the vision that Tally saw of Raelle destroying the world with the witchbomb. Adil and Scylla both suddenly collapse. Raelle tries to heal them, only to find it not working. Tally prays to Alder, telling her that if she can hear her, now would be a good moment. Back at the White House, Silver asks Hearst if something is going to work. Hearst agrees that it will and Silver asks about Kara Brandt, but Hearst tells him she can't be there and sends his regrets. Izadora ask’s Alban if his coffee was good and he answers,"It’s a little bitter".Silver then goes on the air, stating that he is the rightful President of the United States and that he has a simple question: "How can a witch ever be trusted?" Nearby, Sterling, in his Jarrett disguise, meets with Izadora. Silver continues his speech, saying that Wade who tried to depose him was an imposter and he knows because he buried Wade personally, an American hero who served her country for decades. Watching,Alban Hearst starts grinning.

Adil pleads with Abigail to break the link with him. She says she has him, but he tells her he won't pull her under. He pleads with her to let him go when the time comes, but she tells him they're going to have a great life together. Raelle tells Scylla that she has a question: "Why me?" Scylla tells her that it's easy, that she's strong enough to bear it. Tally then tells them that she's figured it out, that everyone has always said they have a big destiny. Anacostia had said it too, and this is it. "I want another one," replies Abigail, but Tally tells her that she wants this one, she just can't see it right now. Abigail points out that she lost her precognitive powers, but Tally says that she doesn't need to see the future, that this about the three of them. It was never about the First Song or preventing the witchbomb, that it's all going to happen. What it's about is how they change it.

Back in Ghana, Alder learns that the woman who became a slave was not Orageuse as they called her, but rather Jem Bellweather, a woman with extremely powerful Work. She reads a record that Jem had powerful songs, but there was one from long ago she barely remembered and was afraid to sing in full voice, one unsung for generations with the power to break the world or make it, depending entirely on how it's sung. Back at the White House, Hearst calls Silver's speech masterful. He suggests that Silver talk more about Wade when they go on the air. Silver just shakes his head. Hearst tells him it's all before them now, but Silver tells him to "eat a big pile of shit." He says that things aren't going the way they planned, asking what is taking so long. Hearst tells him that doubt will come in his greatest moment and to not be seduced. "Whatever you say," he says, going back on the air and talking about Wade again.

Just then, Hearst starts spasming and appears to be eaten alive by the witchplague. In his place appears Penelope Silver. Blanton reels. She asks him if it was worth it. He says he was told they weren't going to harm her and she counters that he watched them inject her. He says she has no idea how powerful they are. "How about how powerful I am?" asks Penny. He apologizes and hugs her, telling her he loves her. "You too," she tells him, activating the witchplague again and consuming him as Izadora and Sterling watch.

Sarah Alder appears before Tally with the stewards. Tally asks what took her so long, but she tells her there's no time to waste and that she has to trust her. Tally agrees that she understands what is happening. She asks where the last steward is and Alder goes to Abigail, telling her that they all knew that Jem was one of the most powerful witches ever, but this was just the beginning. She tells her that she song remains within her. Abigail asks how she'll know how to sing it and Alder tells her that it's hers, that she'll know. Raelle, on the edge of bursting, tells Tally that she's sorry. Tally tells her that it's okay, that she'll see what happens next and to just remember when they sing to send the sound everywhere. The stewards sing and the witchbomb explodes. The song resonates throughout the world. "We did something, Rae," comments Tally. "You certainly did," agrees Alder.

Everyone hugs and sighs in relief. Later, outside Fort Salem, Petra informs a shocked Abigail and the others that they lost Anacostia. She declares her a great hero, saying she's there because of her. They then share a moment together for Anacostia. Nicte, standing next to Alder, says that Anacostia was a hell of a witch and Alder tells her they need to talk. As they head off, Petra tells Abigail that they should get back to Wade. Abigail tells her she's fairly certain they changed everything as they all stare at the transformed sky.

"Do you mind?" asks Alder of Nicte. "Anything for you, Sarah," she tells her, using a Spree lighter to transform her face back to her actual appearance, but looking as she would when she was young and full of life. Alder apologizes, telling her she doesn't deserve what she did to her. Nicte replies that she herself is sorry she wasted so much time hating her instead of enjoying life, that she's actually a very fun person. "Have you met yourself?" quips Alder, commenting that she's heard she's working with Wade to make amends.

Staring in joy, Tally tells the others that her sight is back. She says she can see what's happening everywhere and it's beautiful. Alder arrives, saying that for those who don't have Tally's sight, the Mother wants them to see and to listen carefully. She takes them aboard a helicopter, where the Mother explains that long ago she merged with six women, changing their voices and the way they heard. Their descendants came to be known as witches and they were feared for their gifts. She explains that now her gift is freely given thanks to the Unit, distributed throughout the world in a weak form. Even the Camarilla are now witches. She tells them that the world will need their clarity, that they will be looked to as goddesses.

Alder asks them if she got all that. She says that an old friend told her that "witch is just a word they call us." She tells her that the Mother has told them her work is done. She thanks them for changing the world, telling them to make sure to live up to it when people call them goddesses. She fades away and Abigail, Raelle and Tally chant "Let us begin" in Méníshè.
